Thanks for a great HOWTO! Afte the switch I had the (annoying) problem of the different file managers not showing the same folder/file structure, as if something was not updated. E.g. when saving a file from browser/mail client, the file manager could not see it. Any ideas what the problem could be? Currently reverting the switch back to Nautilus to see if the problem disappears. Thanks.

Yes, that happens when using Nemo without Unity patches in Unity. In Unity's case, you can skip the part about using Nemo to display desktop icons.

That was true a while back but is no longer the case. The only Cinnamon dependencies are now cinnamon-desktop-data (includes some desktop schemas, required by Nemo to save its settings), libcinnamon-desktop4 (which basically only consists of two .so files), and the Cinnamon translations (cinnamon-l10n).

Installing Nemo doesn't install Cinnamon desktop so it doesn't mess in any way with the Gnome session, it doesn't pollute the menu with extra apps, etc.
