I can get Google Play working with widevine. But CPU is still high. Video_decoder is shown as DecryptingVideoDecoder. I get low when watching a much higher definition video on youtube and video_decoder shows GPUVideoDecoder. So I'm sure hardware acceleration does work, but in my case not with widevine.

Can anybody tell if that is indeed the status at the moment? Widevine and hardware acceleration working, but not both at the same time?

Where are those sites with legally distributed movies without DRM .... :-( ?

Following these instructions I do get widevine working. I can watch purchased movies on Google Play, which requires widevine. However, when looking at the CPU usage (~75%) and comparing to the situation previously I'd say there is no hardware acceleration with widevine. The video_decoder shown at media-internals is DecryptingVideoDecoder. When I view a video (at higher definition) on youtube I get ~15% CPU and the video_decoder is GpuVideoDecoder.

Does anybody known whether hardware acceleration should now be working with widevine?

Now that hardware acceleration does work without widevine, I am getting extra interested to know whether there are sites with (legally) provided movies without DRM/widevine....;-). I guess none exist?

Now my chromium can play video h264 with GpuVideoDecoder enabled,but i am a web developer and i want
to duplicate video frames in other canvas like this sample:

This sample works, but if i change the video file (i use always h264 video files) the frames will NOT be drawn by the JS code:

i.context.drawImage(i.video, 0, 0, i.canvas.width, i.canvas.height);

It seems that source video frames are empty or something like that...

In Windows 10 + Chrome 71.0.3578.98 all works perfectly.

Anyone can help me please?

Hi. Before this tutorial, I could not watch youtube 4k videos without stuttering. Now 4k videos don't stutter but they are definitely not rendered at 60fps.

I know I can run 4k 60fps videos on my computer because they play smoothly with the app mpv. Any idea why 4k videos are played at a lower frame rate in chromium?

I'm using it as my main browser and I didn't encounter the issue with logging in to YouTube that you're describing. I did export the GOOGLE_API_KEY, etc., as per the PPA description.

Regarding "how do I find out when the HW acceleration feature is merged into DEV or stable branch", I'm not sure what you mean. If it will be included in the upstream Chromium builds? There are no plans for that I'm afraid.

Hi, thanks for that article! On my Kubuntu 18.04 LTS it was needed to re-install the ffmpeg-extra package after switching to the beta version. Also I found that you can't log-in to Youtube with the beta. But if you were logged-in on the stable version before the update, it'll keep the login status.
What bothers me is, how do I find out when the HW acceleration feature is merged into DEV or stable branch? Can I track it somehow?
