Open calculatorHow these calculators work
Every figure comes from AWS's published on-demand pricing, checked against the AWS Pricing Calculator. Nothing is estimated or averaged across regions, and no input ever leaves your browser — the maths runs client-side, so there is no signup, no email gate, and nothing stored.
They exist because these line items are the ones that most often surprise people reading an AWS bill for the first time. EBS snapshots are billed on incremental changed blocks rather than volume size, so a 500 GB volume snapshotted nightly does not cost 500 GB per night — but a retention policy that never deletes anything still compounds quietly for months. NAT Gateways charge an hourly rate and a per-GB data processing rate, which means a chatty service pulling container images through a NAT Gateway can cost more in data processing than the instances doing the work. DynamoDB's two capacity modes price the same traffic very differently, and which one is cheaper depends on how spiky the table is, not how busy.
When to use them
- Sanity-checking a surprise line item before escalating it to your team.
- Sizing the saving from a snapshot retention or Archive-tier policy change.
- Deciding whether a VPC endpoint would pay for itself against NAT Gateway charges.
- Choosing between DynamoDB on-demand and provisioned capacity for a table.
- Building a before/after number for a cost-reduction proposal.
