AWS European Sovereign Cloud: Finally, Digital Sovereignty on Your Terms 🇪🇺

Today marks a turning point for European organizations drowning in regulatory complexity. The AWS European Sovereign Cloud is now live—and it's not just another region with a fancy name.

For years, European public sector entities and regulated businesses faced a brutal choice: stick with aging on-premises infrastructure or compromise on sovereignty with existing cloud offerings. The AWS European Sovereign Cloud ends that false trade-off.

What Makes This Different

This is a completely separate cloud built inside EU borders. All components—compute, storage, databases, networking—sit entirely within the European Union. No data leaks to non-EU infrastructure. No external dependencies on personnel or systems outside the EU.

The first region lives in Brandenburg, Germany. It operates independently from AWS's other global regions. If the rest of the world goes offline, this cloud keeps running.

Who Runs It Matters

AWS appointed Stéphane Israël, an EU citizen living in the EU, as managing director. Stefan Hoechbauer joined him in January 2026. An advisory board of exclusively EU citizens—including independent third-party representatives—provides governance oversight.

Day-to-day operations, technical support, customer service. All handled by EU residents in the EU. This isn't outsourced. This isn't delegated. It's built into the operational model.

Data Stays Put

Your content remains in the region you choose. Period. Customer-created metadata—roles, permissions, resource labels, configurations—also stays within EU borders. The infrastructure runs its own dedicated IAM and billing systems, both operating independently inside European boundaries.

Technical controls prevent access from outside the EU. Dedicated European trust service providers handle certificate authority operations. Amazon Route 53 nameservers use only European top-level domains.

Security Without Compromise

This isn't a stripped-down version of AWS. You get encryption, key management, access governance, and AWS Nitro System compute isolation. EC2 instances benefit from cryptographically verified platform integrity and hardware-enforced boundaries. Performance stays intact.

Third-party audits confirm compliance with ISO/IEC 27001:2013, SOC 1/2/3, and German BSI C5 attestation. The Sovereign Reference Framework provides end-to-end visibility through SOC 2 attestation.

Full Service Lineup From Day One

This isn't a limited beta. You get SageMaker and Bedrock for AI/ML. EC2 and Lambda for compute. EKS and ECS for containers. Aurora, DynamoDB, and RDS for databases. S3 and EBS for storage. VPC for networking. KMS and Private Certificate Authority for security.

Partners including Adobe, Cisco, Cloudera, GitLab, SAP, and Wiz already support the platform with their solutions.

The Economic Angle

AWS is backing this with €7.8 billion in infrastructure investment. By 2040, this is expected to contribute €17.2 billion to the European economy and support roughly 2,800 full-time jobs annually in local businesses.

How to Get Started

Use partition name aws-eusc and region name eusc-de-east-1. All standard AWS access methods work—Management Console, SDKs, CLI. Pricing is in EUR with billing in eight supported currencies.

The architecture, service portfolio, and APIs are familiar. Migration and deployment follow standard AWS patterns.

What This Means

European organizations no longer have to choose between innovation and sovereignty. You get both. Public sector agencies can move off legacy systems. Regulated industries can finally adopt modern cloud without legal friction.

This isn't about blocking access. Customers anywhere can use the infrastructure. But the controls, the governance, the operational independence—that's all European.

For DevOps teams in the EU, this opens doors. For architects managing compliance nightmares, this removes barriers. For organizations tired of regulatory gymnastics, this is relief.
