Instant EBS Volume Clones: new AWS feature

So AWS just made our lives easier. EBS Volume Clones are here, and they're a game changer for anyone tired of the snapshot dance.

Here's what changed:

Before: Snapshot → wait → restore → attach. Slow. Tedious. Multiple steps that add friction.

Now: One API call. Seconds. Your copy is ready to go.

Instant copies of your EBS volumes within the same AZ. Available immediately. You don't wait for background initialization to finish — you start using it right away. During init, you get baseline performance (3,000 IOPS, 125 MiB/s). Once it's done, full performance kicks in.

This is huge for:

CI/CD pipelines - fresh data for each test run
Development environments — real data, no waiting
Troubleshooting - reproduce issues with actual production state

A few things to know:

Only encrypted volumes work (for now). Same AZ only. Crash-consistent, not application-consistent — freeze your DB or FS first if you need that. Costs standard EBS pricing plus a one-time per-GiB fee for the copy. Don't forget to clean up old copies or your bill gets weird.

Still not a backup solution. Snapshots handle that. Volume Clones are for dev/test speed.

Available everywhere - all commercial regions, selected Local Zones, GovCloud.
